The Role

High-performance data storage systems underpin all facets of the Research platform and HPC estate here, as such, they’re vital to what we do and our success.

As the HPC Storage Engineering Manager you will take ownership of the strategic roadmap for our storage platforms, as well as their design and delivery. You will focus on continuous optimizations and performance enhancements of these platforms as research demands change.

We are looking for a highly experienced technical manager who can drive engineering across the existing Petabyte-scale storage estate, while ensuring minimal downtime and disruption to Research and Trading platforms.

You will lead the significant scaling of our storage platforms and help solve some of the data gravity and global replication challenges this brings with it.

You will excel at the bleeding edge of technology, pushing the boundaries of compute and storage performance and providing an innovative approach to solving complex technical challenges. 

  

Key responsibilities of the role include:  

  • Leading the design and development of high-performance storage systems and scaling them to fit business and research needs
  • Driving cross-functional collaboration on engineering initiatives
  • Working closely with key vendors, providing continuous feedback to leverage and influence roadmaps, ensuring efficient and timely deployment
  • Managing and supporting the development of engineers across the UK and US 
  • Identifying and evaluating emerging trends and technologies in the storage ecosystem, working closely with Architecture and Innovation Teams to appraise and adopt potential solutions
  • Ensuring platforms are reliable, highly available and secure, and managed with a DevOps mindset and Infrastructure-as-Code toolset    

 Who are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:  

  • Extensive technical experience with high performance storage systems in complex distributed systems, such as VAST, Isilon or equivalent
  • Confident stakeholder management and communication skills, aligned to value driven outcomes 
  • Experience scaling high performance storage platforms geographically at scale 
  • Experience of cloud storage services and platforms, preferably AWS
  • Excellent team leadership, project management skills and the ability to promote a high-performance culture within your team
  • Well versed in CI/CD practices, automation tooling, configuration management and SRE concepts 
  • Experience with performance and optimization of Machine Learning workloads and associated storage access patterns 
  • A commitment to security by design by building secure, high-integrity systems 
  • Experience working in a product driven organization
