Do you want to tackle the biggest questions in finance with near infinite compute power at your fingertips?
G-Research is a leading quantitative research and technology firm, with offices in London and Dallas.
We are proud to employ some of the best people in their field and to nurture their talent in a dynamic, flexible and highly stimulating culture where world-beating ideas are cultivated and rewarded.
This is a hybrid role based in our new Dallas infrastructure hub where we work on the latest technologies in a cutting-edge environment.
The role
G-Research is looking for an Engineering Manager to lead and grow our Compute Platform Management (CPM) team across our UK and US sites.
CPM operates within our hybrid cloud management function, alongside:
- Hardware provisioning and break/fix support
- Deployment of compute resources to end users
- Development of new features to meet user needs
Within this function, our Infrastructure Engineering teams manage a complex, always-on on-premises cloud platform spanning multiple time zones. Built on OpenStack, VMware, and Kubernetes, this platform consists of thousands of servers housed in multi-megawatt data centres across Europe and the US, supporting parallelised research simulations.
As an Engineering Manager, you will collaborate with other Compute leaders to provide local management and technical oversight. You will also lead by example, demonstrating deep technical knowledge of our platforms and tooling, with the ability to provide hands-on support to engineers when needed.
Key responsibilities of the role include:
- Lead and manage the global CPM team, developing and executing strategies.
- Ensure CPM adheres to best practices, maintaining a balance between quality and delivery.
- Develop and manage compute capacity and availability plans.
- Work closely with Data Centre teams to oversee hardware implementation and ongoing management.
- Take ownership of issues across Compute, assisting engineers in diagnosing and resolving problems.
- Coach and mentor team members in Dallas, helping them reach their full potential while aligning them with shared objectives.
- Coordinate with vendors to manage SLAs and ensure timely, high-quality delivery.
- Escalate critical issues to the UK team when necessary.
Who are we looking for?
The ideal candidate will have the following skills and experience:
- A technical background in compute server hardware administration and operations.
- Experience with automation, scripting, and CI/CD tooling; such as Ansible, Python, and Jenkins.
- Background in managing large-scale high-performance compute infrastructure.
- Knowledge of managing OpenStack and Kubernetes platforms.
- Familiarity with monitoring and data analytics tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, and ELK.
- Line management experience, with the ability to develop and mentor engineers through well-structured development plans.
- Experience managing tickets and workflows using JIRA or other ITIL-enabled systems.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to interact with both local and remote stakeholders at infrastructure and management levels.
- A proactive mindset, initiative, and a positive work ethic.
- Willingness to travel to the UK periodically to build relationships and collaborate with colleagues in London.
- Experience managing globally dispersed operations teams.
